What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition where the cartilage within a joint starts to degrade. The purpose of cartilage is to allow free range of motion within a joint. This degradation of cartilage may result in increased pain and swelling at the site of the arthritis.
Arthritis can affect almost any joint in the body. Symptoms of arthritis in the foot may include:
- Decreased range of motion
Conservative treatment of joint arthritis may include:
- Rest and icing
- Oral or topical anti-inflammatories
- Shoe gear modification
- Orthotic devices
If conservative treatment is unsuccessful in alleviating a patients pain, other treatment options may include steroid injection or possible surgical intervention.
