What is Achilles Tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is a common condition that affects many patients, young and old. The Achilles tendon is a band of soft tissue that spans the back of the calf. This piece of soft tissue may become inflamed and painful, most commonly due to overuse.
Achilles tendonitis is often seen in athletes that require sudden increases in intensity or long durations of activity.
Common symptoms of achilles tendinitis include pain, tenderness, swelling, or tightness in the back of the calf.
It is important to identify these symptoms early on. Continuing to walk or run with achilles tendonitis may result in partial or full tear of the tendon.
Initial treatment for achilles tendonitis include ice, rest and nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory drugs (NSIADs). If pain does not improve with initial treatment, physical therapy, orthotic devices, or surgery may be needed. Schedule and appointment today if you believe you are suffering from achilles tendonitis.
